Description

Genuine Victorian pinchbeck necklace, an unusual design of 19 links each measuring 22mm x 16mm linked to form a necklace measuring 20” long with push in barrel clasp normally pinchbeck is used to make guard chains.

Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc which when mixed in certain proportions closely resembles gold in appearance.  Invented in the early 18th century by a London clock maker called Christopher Pinchbeck it allowed ordinary people to buy “gold” effect jewellery on a budget.  Gold was only sold in 18ct quality at this time and we have had the piece professionally polished which showcases how the pinchbeck polishes up to resemble 18ct gold.
